Rebecca - 2010 Graduate Program

Home State:Western Australia
University: Murdoch University
Qualifications: Bachelor of Arts in Sustainable Development

My interest in the environment and hence my studies in Sustainable Development and choosing this Department to work for, was strongly influenced by growing up in regional areas and spending most of my childhood outdoors.

In my final year of university, I decided that a graduate program in the Australian Public Service would be an ideal opportunity because of the emphasis on continued learning through the training, mentoring and work rotations.

First Placement: Living Greener, Renewables and Energy Efficiency Division

My first placement was in Living Greener, the section that was devoted towards the development and maintenance of the LivingGreener website. In this placement I researched and wrote a report to be used by the team about the potential use of 'user personalisation' on the LivingGreener website.

Second Placement: Indigenous Languages and Culture section, Culture Division

During my placement in the Indigenous Languages and Culture section, I gained an understanding of the workings of the two programs run by the section; the Indigenous Cultural Support (ICS) program, and the Maintenance of Indigenous Languages and Records (MILR) Program. My main task was to work on an analysis of the activities supported by the ICS program.

Third Placement: Sustainability Education section, Environment Quality Division

The main role of the section was to implement the Australian Government's National Action Plan for Education for Sustainability; Living Sustainably. In this placement I coordinated the Departmental exhibition stall at the Australian Association for Environmental Education conference, and assisted with the implementation of the Australian Sustainable Schools Initiative (AuSSI).

Final Placement: Monitoring and Audit Section, Approvals and Wildlife Division

I accepted an offer to join the Monitoring and Audit Section as my final and permanent placement after completing the graduate program in December.
