Roya - 2010 Graduate Program

Home State: New South Wales / Australian Capital Territory
University: Australian National University
Qualifications: Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies (Sustainability)

I entered the department with an appreciation for the complexity of sustainability challenges and a desire to develop skills to aid me in achieving positive change in this field. I majored in Environmental Policy and Development Studies and have a broad range of experience around Australia and in the Pacific across the areas of youth, community, education and environmental management.

First Placement: Ozone and Synthetic Gas Team, Environment Quality Division

My first placement gave me the opportunity to manage two interrelated projects relating to the air-conditioning and refrigeration industry, specifically developing strategies to reduce emissions from end-of-life equipment. The first project focused on generating research to inform policy development while the second was a cost benefit analysis of a pilot program that had been undertaken. This placement allowed me to develop skills in analyzing, evaluating and reporting on information and I was able to undertake useful economics training with others in the division.

Second Placement: Western Australian State Team, Australian Government Land and Coast

My second rotation exposed me to the world of program administration. I was able to gain insight into the finalization of the Natural Heritage Trust and National Action Plan for Salinity and Water Quality programs by implementing a process to acquit a large number of projects amidst other team priorities. I also got a taste of the Caring for our Country program and thoroughly enjoyed being able to travel to Perth and Exmouth, engaging with proponents and visiting project sites, varying from wetlands to whale sharks.

Third Placement: Water for the Future Review Team, Water Reform Division

My third placement was with a small taskforce conducting a high level review of the Water for the Future initiative. It provides for a broad perspective across the work of the Water Group and wonderful exposure to high level challenges and opportunities for the department. In this role I gained valuable experience in review writing, ministerial briefing and consultation with internal stakeholders and advisors.

Final Placement: Strategic Review Team, Water Reform Division

I stayed on in my role in water and a new team grew - we are currently working on a Review of the National Water Commission and coordinate briefing on water issues for international meetings under the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

'the best thing about working for us ... is the environment'
