Where do the 75 species of Australian banksias grow in the wild?

The Western Australian Department of Conservation and Land Management provided support for recording observations in the field. Volunteers in all States and Territories provided the labour and gathered information in the wild.

The outcome of this project, The Banksia Atlas, attests to the enthusiasm, diligence and competence of the contributors. Banksias turned up in unexpected places and in the short space of three years (1984–1986), they were mapped and studied at a surprising level of detail. Hundreds of people became interested in them and new species were identified. Volunteers recorded banksias’ habitats, flowering and new shoot growth times, and responses to fire.

For each Banksia there is an illustration and map, together with distribution, growth form, habitat, and other biological details.
