The distribution of threatened and near threatened taxa is mapped by aggregating the maps from each recovery outline or taxon summary. The former distributions of extinct taxa are determined from the literature. All maps are indicative rather than definitive but serve to show where declines in Australian birds have been greatest.
For terrestrial birds the greatest concentrations in all categories are on islands or in the areas where agricultural development has been most intense, particularly the south-east and south-west. The distribution of threatened and near threatened oceanic birds is largely coincident with the marine distribution of albatrosses and giant petrels.
