About the submission

Under the Australian Government's Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, fisheries that export Australian native marine species must undergo assessment to determine the extent to which management arrangements will ensure that the fishery is managed in an ecologically sustainable way. The Australian Government developed publicly available guidelines, 'Guidelines for the Ecologically Sustainable Management of Fisheries' (the Guidelines) to assist in the assessment process. Fishery management arrangements are assessed against these Guidelines which are intended to ensure that rigorous and transparent assessments are conducted in close cooperation with fisheries agencies, fishing industry and the wider community. The Guidelines were established after extensive consultation with industry, Governments and environment groups.
