Queensland East Coast Fin Fish Fishery

Agency submission for environmental assessment under the EPBC Act
Fisheries Queensland, 2011

Agency submission on ecological sustainability

About the submission

The current export approval for the Queensland East Coast Fin Fish Fishery expires on 28 February 2012 and the fishery is now due for assessment for ongoing export accreditation. In September 2011, the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities received a submission from Fisheries Queensland, for consideration in the reassessment of the Queensland East Coast Fin Fish Fishery under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act).

The submission has been prepared to address the Australian Government Guidelines for the Ecologically Sustainable Management of Fisheries - 2nd edition. It provides information on:

  • actions taken in response to the conditions of the 2008 approved wildlife trade operation declaration for the fishery;
  • the implementation of recommendations made in the 2008 Australian Government assessment of the fishery;
  • changes to management arrangements since the 2008 assessment; and
  • the status of fish stocks in the fishery.

The submission will be used to assess the management arrangements of the fishery for the purposes of Part 13 and Part 13A of the EPBC Act.

Consideration will be given to:

  • declaring the Queensland East Coast Inshore Fin Fish Fishery as managed consistent with the Queensland Fisheries Act 1994 and the Queensland Fisheries Regulation 2008, as an approved wildlife trade operation under section 303FN of the EPBC Act; and
  • including in the list of exempt native specimens, specimens harvested in the Queensland East Coast Inshore Fin Fish Fishery under the provisions of the Queensland Fisheries Act 1994 and the Queensland Fisheries Regulation 2008.
  • In accordance with the provisions of sections 303FR and 303DC of the EPBC Act, you are invited to comment on this proposal.
