Executive summary

The Department of Fisheries Western Australia (DFWA) has submitted a document for assessment under Parts 13 and 13A of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). The draft document - Application to Environment Australia on the West Coast Deep Sea Crab Interim Managed Fishery (the Submission) was received by the Department of Environment and Heritage (DEH)1 in August 2003 after a period of discussion between DFWA and DEH, during which preliminary drafts were refined. The Submission was released for a thirty-day public comment period that expired on 12 September 2003. One public submission was received and DFWA provided a response to the issues raised. No changes were made to the Submission as a result of public comment.

The Submission reports on Western Australia's (WA's) West Coast Deep Sea Crab Interim Managed Fishery (WCDSCIM Fishery) against the Australian Government Guidelines for the Ecologically Sustainable Management of Fisheries. The DEH assessment considers the Submission and associated documents, public comments and DFWA's response to the comments.
