Environmental Assessment of the Western Australian Octopus Fisheries under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999

The Department of the Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities received a submission - Submission to the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities on the Western Australian Octopus Fisheries against the Guidelines for the Ecologically Sustainable Management of Fisheries - from the Department of Fisheries Western Australia in November 2010.

The report has been prepared to address the Australian Government Guidelines for the Ecologically Sustainable Management of Fisheries, 2nd edition (the Guidelines) for the Developmental Octopus Fishery (DevOF) and the octopus sector of the Cockburn Sound (Line and Trap) Managed Fishery (CSLT). The submission will be used to assess the operation of the fishery for the purposes of Parts 13 and 13A of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act).

Consideration will be given to:

  • declaring the DevOF and the octopus sector of the CSLP as managed consistent with the Western Australian Fisheries Resources Management Act 1995, and Cockburn Sound (Line and Pot) Limited Entry Fishing Notice 1995 (CSLP only), as an approved Wildlife Trade Operation under section 303FN of the EPBC Act; and
  • inclusion in the list of exempt native specimens, specimens harvested in the DevOF and the octopus sector of the CSLP under the provisions of the Western Australian Fisheries Resources Management Act 1995, and Cockburn Sound (Line and Pot) Limited Entry Fishing Notice 1995 (CSLP only).

In accordance with the provisions of sections 303FR and 303DC of the EPBC Act, you are invited to comment on this proposal.
