Department of Fisheries, Western Australia, 2012

Agency submission on ecological sustainability

About the submission

The current export approvals for the Western Australian Temperate Shark Fisheries are valid until 26 March 2012 and the fisheries are now due for assessment for ongoing export accreditation. The Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (DSEWPaC) received a submission – Application to Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities on Western Australia's Temperate Demersal Gillnet and Demersal Longline Fisheries (Covering the West Coast Demersal Gillnet and Demersal Longline [Interim] Managed Fishery and the Joint Authority Southern Demersal Gillnet and Demersal Longline Managed Fishery] Against the Guidelines for the Ecologically Sustainable Management of Fisheries (2nd Edition) – 2007 – January 2012, from the Western Australian Department of Fisheries in January 2012. The report has been prepared to address the Australian Government Guidelines for the Ecologically Sustainable Management of Fisheries - 2nd edition (the Guidelines) and to provide updates on the implementation of conditions and recommendations made in the 2009 assessment of the fisheries. The submission will be used to assess the operation of the fisheries for the purposes of Parts 13 and 13A of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act).

Consideration will be given to:

  • declaring the Western Australian Temperate Shark Fisheries, as managed under the Western Australian Fish Resources Management Act 1994, as approved wildlife trade operations under section 303FN of the EPBC Act; and
  • inclusion in the list of exempt native specimens, specimens harvested in the Western Australian Temperate Shark Fisheries as managed under the Western Australian Fish Resources Management Act 1994.

In accordance with the provisions of sections 303FR and 303DC of the EPBC Act, you are invited to comment on this proposal.
