About the application

The Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities has received an application for a permit to interfere with cetaceans under Part 13, section 237 of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act).

The application is for a permit to conduct vessel surveys and photo-identification of individual humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) at five sites on the east coast of Australia: Port Douglas/Cairns, Makay/Capricorn, Whitsunday Islands and Hervey Bay, Queensland and Eden, NSW. The applicants intend to use the findings from the investigation to help define the east Australian calving grounds, determine rates of interchange between study sites, generate refined estimates of population abundance, and document habitat use within each study area.

In accordance with the provisions of section 237(3b) of the EPBC Act, you are invited to comment on this proposal before COB 10 June 2011.
