About the application

The Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities has received an application for a permit under Part 13, section 237 of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act).

The application is for 6 projects that involve photography, satellite tagging and DNA sampling using sloughed skin sampling, biopsy sampling or PAXARM techniques. The research will contribute to conservation through providing a greater understanding of the population dynamics of whale and dolphin species along the east coast of Australia and in the South Pacific region. The projects will occur at different locations on the east coast of Australia as well as Palau and Niue. Research will be undertaken by staff from the Southern Cross University Whale Research Centre.

In accordance with the provisions of section 237(3b) of the EPBC Act, you are invited to comment on this proposal before COB 8 March 2013.
