Bendigo Tramways Depot Development: significance of site

Bendigo's tram depot is the oldest operating depot in Australia, and one of the oldest in the world. It is the only remaining regional city tramways infrastructure in the country. The site is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register.

While trams ceased as public transport in Bendigo in 1972, they have never stopped running through the city. Bendigo's trams provide the link between many of the urban sites and markers that make it a living city museum.

The depot is therefore important as a heritage site in its own right, and also crucial to the on-street operations of Bendigo's 40-strong fleet of trams built between 1890 and 1975.
