Rabbi's residence renewal: significance of site
The Broken Hill Synagogue was erected 100 years ago in 1910. It is a fascinating record of early Jewish life in Australia, and is the only country synagogue built in Australia. The main synagogue room retains original furniture including a simple wooden ark.
The Synagogue is the headquarters of the Broken Hill Historical Society, and it attracts international and interstate visitors. The Society has erected a separate archive building at the rear of the site which includes a research centre.
