Wilcannia Post Office conservation and adaptation: significance of site
Wilcannia Post Office was erected in the 1880s, contributing to the development of postal services in regional Australia. Wilcannia prospered in the 1900s and evolved into the third largest inland port in Australia.
The Post Office and Residence form part of what was an official precinct. This precinct was designed by Colonial Architect James Barnet, and comprises a police residence, jail and courthouse.
The streetscape of neo-classical Victorian buildings reflects the formality of architecture in Australia in the 1880s.
