Regional Natural Heritage Program funding outcomes for 2005-06

A total of 54 project proposals for RNHP funding in 2005-06 were submitted by NGOs and other organisations. Projects were assessed particularly for their potential to achieve direct on-ground outcomes.

The project aims to strengthen marine protected area management at five sites, through:
  • Development of zoning and management plans
  • Improvement of monitoring and surveillance systems
  • Raising community awareness, establishment of a consultative forum and progression towards co-management
  • Establishment of a field office at a new site

New projects
Conservation of Key Biodiversity Areas within the Sierra Madre Mountain Range
This project will provide the necessary data to support the longer term goal of establishing new or expanded protected areas. Activities include:
  • Biodiversity assessment of the forest area to develop baseline species data
  • Training of local scientists and students in basic biodiversity assessment
  • Compilation of baseline information to assist local government decision-makers in the design and establishment of protected areas
Conservation International Luzon Island, Philippines $77,125
Community conservation of the Scotts Tree Kangaroo in the Torricelli Mountain Range, Sandaun Province, Papua New Guinea
The project forms part of a larger conservation program in the area aiming to facilitate effective protection of the tree kangaroo species and other biodiversity. Activities include:
  • Population and distribution monitoring
  • Capacity building of conservation officers and animal caretaker
  • Maintaining the community based hunting moratorium on tree kangaroos, including an evaluation of its effectiveness
  • Enhanced community involvement in field research
Zoos Victoria Papua New Guinea $51,390
Strengthening Local Management Effectiveness and Enforcement in Coral Reef Reserve Areas in Central Provinces of Vietnam
This project focuses on effective use of marine resources to conserve coral reef biodiversity, through:
  • Targeted training of community members in coral reef monitoring and conservation enforcement
  • Development and dissemination of communication products to promote increased community awareness of coral reef conservation
Centre for Marinelife Conservation & Community Development Vietnam $52,786
Enhancement of Marine Biodiversity Conservation Efforts in Votua Village, Fiji Islands
This activity contributes to on-going community-based marine conservation efforts and aims to achieve biodiversity conservation through:
  • An assessment of the status, and identification of the key threats, to coral reef resources
  • Educational workshops on marine resource planning, bringing technical assistance to village based conservation and management planning
The National Marine Protected Areas Centre (USA)   $62,110
Continuing Integrated Conservation and Development Program for the Conservation of the Biodiversity and the Golden Headed Langur
The project addresses habitat loss and population fragmentation through inappropriate land use and development practices. Activities include:
  • Conservation planning and monitoring
  • Livelihood generation activities for local people
  • Local community awareness raising
  • Development and implementation of sustainable ecotourism models
