Land Disturbance

Australia's Natural Lands and Rivers

The disturbance* database has been developed by Australian scientists using a unique methodology. This methodology uses a ranking system with four criteria: Remoteness from Settlement; Remoteness from Access; Biophysical Naturalness; and Apparent Naturalness.

The Australian Land Disturbance Database data can be downloaded via Discover Information Geographically.

The disturbance indicators have been used to map Australia's least disturbed lands. Areas of minimal disturbance that meet wilderness size thresholds were delineated by the Commonwealth Wilderness Delineation Project, and are available in the maps section.

You can also download the ArcView extension and instructions. This programme enables you to recreate the disturbance indicators using your own data.

* disturbance refers to that resulting from post-european technological and population impacts.
