Product Stewardship for Oil Program (PSO)
Transitional assistance funding
Transitional assistance funding of $34.5 million was provided for strategic initiatives to increase used oil recycling and ensure a sustainable oil recycling industry. This funding commenced in July 2000 and ceased in June 2007.
Transitional assistance was an interim mechanism to engender change that would underpin the long-term viability of the oil recycling industry. It complemented the stewardship levy-benefit arrangements. The funds were used to:
- ensure a sustainable used oil recycling industry
- accelerate the uptake of used oil from urban and rural Australia
- facilitate industry and community involvement to achieve the objectives of the PSO, and
- to the extent possible, address special difficulties that remote Australia has in the recovery and management of used oil for recycling.
Grants awarded under the Transitional Assistance mechanism included funding for public awareness campaigns, oil recycling technologies and establishment of more than 950 used oil collection facilities across Australia.
