Issue: Contributions and pressures between the coasts and oceans and land - Effects of changes in the ocean on the land
This is an issue under the Coasts and oceans theme of the Data Reporting System.
The ocean contributes saline waters, marine species and climate moderation to coastal aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. It can place pressure on coastal terrestrial environments during sea storms, sea surge events, and seawater intrusions or in the event of rising sea levels or changing currents.
- CO-01 Trends in selected groups of coastal and marine species and habitats
Changes in distribution and abundance of a range of selected species that live at the land-ocean interface may be indicative of changes arriving from either the ocean or the land, for example seawater incursion from the ocean or acid sulphate soils from the land.
- CO-03 Sea level
Sea level change has the potential to place pressure on the land as coastal terrestrial ecosystems become drowned or saline. Invasion of the coast by the ocean also has the potential to impact on the ocean as marine organisms are exposed to acid sulphate soils.
- CO-68 Examples of sea surge and seawater intrusion events
Influx of sea water onto the land can occur as a result of sea storms or as a result of sea level change which may be associated with anthropogenic climate change. It can place significant pressure on resident species and ecosystems.
