Dr Andrew Harford is a Research Scientist with the ERISS Ecotoxicology program. His role involves investigating the effects of mining effluents, metals/major ions and suspended sediments on aquatic biota. Currently, his research is focused on the effect of pulse exposures of mining-related contaminants and the development of appropriate toxicity tests to assess the impacts of suspended sediments on tropical freshwater species. He also is currently involved in a project to develop sediment quality guidelines for uranium, which includes 454-pyrosequencing of microbial communities.

His postdoctoral experience included work in the field of nanotoxicology and human-health risk assessment. Dr Harford’s PhD project involved the optimisation and application of immune function assays in high-value Australian native freshwater fishes and was the first study to assess the immunotoxicity of aquatic contaminants in native freshwater fishes.

Areas of expertise and research interests

Aquatic ecotoxicology (including freshwater and marine), sediment ecotoxicology, particulate toxicology (including suspended sediments and nanoparticles), environmental statistics and risk assessment, metagenomics and immunotoxicology.

  • Toxicity of treated pond and process waters from Ranger Uranium Mine to tropical freshwater species
  • Preliminary assessment of the toxicity of manganese to tropical freshwater species
  • The use of metagenomics to measure the impact of metal contamination in sediments on microbial communities (in collaboration with CDU)
