Proud Mary: Smart Water - Modernising Maryborough's Water and Wastewater Systems

Maryborough, Qld

Total funding: Total project cost of $12.6 million, with funding of $5.739 million from the Australian Government under the National Water Security Plan for Cities and Towns and the remaining funding provided by Wide Bay Water Corporation.

About the project

The project involves the development of a series of water infrastructure and demand management projects to deliver greater water security to the City of Maryborough. The project will replace mains infrastructure, establish district metering and pressure management and install smart metering systems for domestic residences and business sites. The smart meters will enable an effective water conservation program to be implemented through more regular readings and consumption analyses, individual notification of excessive users, promotion campaigns and new water pricing policies.

Project benefits

This project will:

  • reduce potable water use by 539 million litres each year
  • promote greater awareness of water use and scarcity amongst residents
  • improve demand management within the City of Maryborough, and
  • reduce the water pressure in the network and prolong the life of council assets.

Progress

The project commenced on 25 November 2010 and is scheduled for completion by 30 June 2012.
