3. Australian River Assessment System (AusRivAS) Explained

3.1 What is AusRivAS

AusRivAS (Australian River Assessment System) is a rapid river health assessment system which uses presence or absence of macroinvertebrate taxa to assess the biological health of Australian rivers. AusRivAS was developed under the National River Health Program (NRHP) and funded by the Australian Government in response to growing concern in Australia for maintaining ecological values. The NRHP (which also incorporated the Australia-Wide Assessment of River Health (AWORH), Monitoring River Health Initiative MRHI ) was developed as a collaborative project involving the major environmental / natural resources management agencies from each state and territory and was administered by the Department of the Environment and Heritage and the Land and Water Resource Research and Development Corporation (LWRRDC.)
