About the application
The Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities has received an application for a permit under Part 13, section 237 of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act).
The application is for multiple cetacean research projects in Australian's Exclusive Economic Zone and involves close approaches to whales and dolphins and biopsy sampling. The research will contribute to conservation through providing a greater understanding of the population dynamics of Australia's whale and dolphin species, as well as testing the current boat-based whale watching guidelines to ensure that humpback whales are not being negatively impacted upon. Research will be undertaken by staff from Macquarie University and Flinders University.
In accordance with the provisions of section 237(3b) of the EPBC Act, you are invited to comment on this proposal before COB 1 April 2013.
