Strengthening Bourke's Community: Planning for a sustainable water supply
Bourke Shire Council
About the project
This project will enable an expert review of the future water supply and water conservation options for Bourke, and evaluation of the most sustainable water source(s) in the event of severe drought and / or the effects of Climate Change.
The evaluation will review the following options for sustainable water supply:
- ground water and river water extraction;
- increasing the weir capacity;
- water storage;
- stormwater capture; and
- water recycling
Further investigation and reporting on the most suitable option for water supply including consideration of planning, design, environment, management, cost and community issues will also form part of this project.
This project was completed in October 2012 and has greatly benefited the Bourke Shire Council and community via the production of a report that reviews water supply and infrastructure options in a future with less water. The outcomes of this report will allow Bourke Shire Council to plan their 10, 20 and 30 year infrastructure maintenance and replacement requirements.
Further information on this project may be obtained by contacting the Bourke Shire Council directly on 02 6830 8000.
The Strengthening Basin Communities program is funded by the Australian Government's Water for the Future initiative.
