The Reef 2050 Plan

The Reef 2050 Plan was released by the Australian and Queensland governments in March 2015 and is the overarching framework for protecting and managing the Reef until 2050. The Plan is a world-first document that outlines concrete management measures for the next 35 years to ensure the Outstanding Universal Value of the Reef is preserved now and for generations to come.

The Plan sets clear actions, targets, objectives and outcomes to drive and guide the short, medium and long-term management of the Reef. The Plan firmly responds to the pressures facing the Reef and will address cumulative impacts and increase the Reef’s resilience to longer term threats such as climate change.

At the core of the Plan is an outcomes framework that will drive progress towards an overarching vision:

To ensure the Great Barrier Reef continues to improve on its Outstanding Universal Value every decade between now and 2050 to be a natural wonder for each successive generation to come.”

Progress from inception to November 2016 is captured within the Reef 2050 Plan Update on Progress, which was presented to the World Heritage Centre and IUCN on 1 December 2016.

Investment

The Reef 2050 Plan is underpinned by an Investment Framework which establishes current investment in Reef 2050 Plan actions, determines investment priorities for the future and sets out strategies for boosting investment and diversifying its sources.  The Investment Framework will guide future funding decisions for Reef 2050 Actions over the coming years.

Advisory bodies

 Commonwealth of Australia (GBRMPA)

Working together with community, industry, science and Traditional Owners is critical to the success of the Reef 2050 Plan to protect and improve the Reef. Two advisory committees are providing critical advice and ensuring we are using our resources to the best possible effect – an Independent Expert Panel and a Reef 2050 Advisory Committee.
