Coal and coal seam gas projects
The Australian Government protects water resources from the impacts of coal and coal seam gas development through the 'water trigger' provisions of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). Under the EPBC Act, the Australian Government must seek and consider the advice of the Independent Expert Scientific Committee on Coal Seam Gas and Large Coal Mining Development (IESC), to ensure decisions are informed by best available science.
Under state protocols, declared states (Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia) can equally seek the advice of the IESC at certain points in their assessments and approval process.
The IESC provides independent scientific advice to the Australian Government Environment Minister and relevant state ministers on the water-related impacts of proposed coal seam gas or large coal mining developments.
This project list includes:
- all projects referred to the Commonwealth under the water trigger, including those that have been referred recently for which the IESC have not yet provided advice,
- projects referred prior to the introduction of the water trigger for which IESC advice was sought from the Commonwealth and/or state regulators, and
- projects referred to the IESC under the protocol of a declared State (Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia).
