The National Reserve System Task Group
As part of the national conservation partnership, all levels of government are working together to develop the National Reserve System.
The key policy group is the National Reserve System Task Group, with experts from a range of fields and representatives from all governments and the not-for-profit sector. A scientific advisory sub-group of experts from the states, territories and CSIRO supports their work.
The Task Group directs the national effort to build Australia's network of protected areas by strategically targeting new acquisitions to fill gaps in the network and connect reserves together.
The Task Group also provides guidance to the Australian Government's National Reserve System program.
The Task Group's current objectives are the implementation of the 38 directions agreed in the Directions for the National Reserve System - A Partnership Approach, which include:
- Improved monitoring and reporting on the 'comprehensiveness, adequacy and representativeness' of the National Reserve System
- Reviewing and more consistently implementing models and mechanisms for protection
- Improving management frameworks and standards for protected areas
- Exploring partnerships for funding, protection, engaging the public and implementing the Directions Statement.
The National Reserve System Task Group reports back to all governments through the Natural Resource Management Ministerial Council.
NRS Scientific Advisory Sub-Group
National Reserve System Task Group is supported by a Scientific Advisory Sub-group which consists of nominated scientific experts from each State and Territory and CSIRO. This group focuses on the more technical elements of the Directions for the NRS regarding adequacy, climate change, priorities inclusion in the NRS and the scientific framework.
