The Tasmanian Land Conservancy
The Tasmanian Land Conservancy is a non-government organisation that conserves, enhances and protects Tasmania's natural environment by purchasing and managing land.
Tasmania is a state known for its beauty and wild places. It has an impressive level of reservation on public land, yet many of the state's unique ecosystems, plants, and animals occur on private land. The Tasmanian Land Conservancy also works with private landowners to place conservation covenants over parts of their property, in the Protected Areas on Private Land Program.
This innovative program is a partnership between the Australian Government, Tasmania's Department of Primary Industries and Water, the Tasmanian Land Conservancy and the Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association. The project encourages private land holders to covenant natural areas for conservation. These covenants protect a wide variety of non-forest ecosystems such as grasslands, woodlands, heath and saltmarsh.
Since 1997, the Australian Government has invested almost $1.8 million, which has been matched by the partner organisations, to establish more than 100 covenants over more than 4,000 hectares of private land. All these private lands are part of the National Reserve System.
Since 2001, with more than $430,000 from the Australian Government, the Tasmanian Land Conservancy has purchased three protected areas, adding an additional 1,000 hectares to the reserve system.
The non-government organisation also operates a revolving fund to buy land, protect it with perpetual conservation covenants and resell it to committed conservationists so the funds can be re used to purchase other properties that need protection.
