Australian Wildlife Conservancy
The Australian Wildlife Conservancy acquires land, and works with other landholders, to establish sanctuaries for the conservation of threatened wildlife and ecosystems.
Australian Wildlife Conservancy owns 15 sanctuaries covering 1.1 million hectares, from north Queensland, the Kimberley, western New South Wales and the Northern Territory to the forests of south-western Australia. Australian Wildlife Conservancy focuses on delivering practical on-ground conservation programs which are based on the best available science. Since 2001, with almost six million dollars from the Australian Government, Australian Wildlife Conservancy have added six protected areas, covering almost 900,000 hectares.
Over 80 per cent of Australian Wildlife Conservancy's staff are based in the field, where they implement programs including feral animal control, weed eradication, fire management and translocation of threatened species. An important part of their work is public education, allowing Australians to experience and enjoy the beauty of our wildlife and wilderness areas. The non-government organisations operates immersive visitors' programs at several sanctuaries including dedicated programs for school children.
Australian Wildlife Conservancy also works in partnership with universities, museums, CSIRO and a range of other science organisations to conduct strategic research on key issues affecting Australian wildlife.
Australian Wildlife Conservancy aims to ensure that its sanctuaries act as 'catalysts' for broader landscape scale conservation efforts. Accordingly, Australian Wildlife Conservancy works closely with its neighbours to also promote conservation beyond the borders of each Australian Wildlife Conservancy sanctuary.
