Uluru wins top tourism award

Last night Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park took out the top prize at the 2012 Brolga Territory Tourism Awards in Darwin, winning the Major Tourist Attraction.

The judges also gave the park an encouragement award in the cultural and heritage tourism category.

The prestigious awards recognises the park's commitment to offering visitors a rewarding experience of the Northern Territory's Red Centre and the opportunity to learn more about Anangu culture and history.

The World-Heritage listed park achieves all this through successful joint management between its Anangu traditional owners and Parks Australia.

Traditional owners Judy Trigger and Millie Okai were in Darwin for the awards.

"This is a great achievement and recognition for everyone who works so hard to make Uluru one of the most iconic, must-visit places in the Northern Territory," Judy Trigger said.

"We've been looking after this land for generations. Today Uluru and Kata Tjuta continue to hold powerful religious and cultural connections for us.

"We love to welcome visitors to our land to share our knowledge of Tjukurpa (law), our ancestors and culture.

"An award like this helps us show off what we can offer visitors at Uluru, let them know what a special place it is to us and to all of Australia."

Today Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park offers world-class cultural and heritage experiences for more than 250,000 visitors, including opportunities to meet with Anangu elders at our Cultural Centre.

Uluru is an essential part of the Red Centre experience - a national icon that draws visitors from across Australia and around the world.

Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park now goes on to compete in the National Qantas Australian Tourism Awards to be announced on 15 February in Hobart.
