Strategic assessment of irrigation development throughout Tasmania
Agreement
Under national environment law, the Australian Government Minister for the Environment may agree to a strategic assessment of the impacts of actions on nationally protected matters under a policy, plan or program.
On 30 September 2014, the Department entered into an agreement with Tasmanian Irrigation to undertake a strategic assessment of proposed irrigation development throughout Tasmania. The strategic assessment will be undertaken in accordance with section 146 of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act).

Cessation of the strategic assessment agreement
On 20 January 2015, Tasmanian Irrigation notified the Department of their intention to end the Agreement to undertake a strategic assessment of the impacts of irrigation actions in Tasmania under the EPBC Act. Clause 13 of the section 146 Agreement signed on 30 September 2014 allows a termination of the agreement to occur by written agreement between both parties.
On 16 February 2015, a delegate of the Minister for the Environment agreed to this request. The strategic assessment therefore ceased effective from this date.
