Research into access to recycled water and impediments to recycled water investment
ACIL Tasman, June 2005
About the publication
To support the NWI, the Australian Government, along with all the states and territories, commissioned ACIL Tasman to undertake research to identify impediments to investment in recycled water schemes. Research methods included a literature review, internet survey and in-depth surveys of stakeholders involved in the recycled water industry. The key impediments for investment in recycled water schemes identified by the research are the cost of infrastructure followed by the cost of recycled water compared to alternative sources. Other impediments identified, include the lack of financial incentives and the complexity in project implementation for recycled water schemes.
With cities such as Sydney and Perth and regions such as South-East Queensland already suffering long-term water deficiencies, the research findings are seen as important to identifying and dealing with impediments to recycled water use to guarantee a secure water supply for the future.
