The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on 20 to 22 June 2012. Also referred to as Rio+20, the conference is convened under the authority of the United Nations General Assembly.

The Rio+20 Conference is an important step in ongoing international efforts to accelerate progress towards achieving sustainable development globally. The conference will mark the 20th anniversary of the 1992 UN Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro (the Earth Summit).

It will also mark the 10th anniversary of the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg.

The 1992 and 2002 summits were headline international events and key drivers of the sustainable development agenda. Similarly, Rio+20 presents an opportunity to re-direct and re-energise political commitment to the three pillars of sustainable development: economic growth, social improvement and environmental protection.
