Australian Coal Mine Methane Reduction Program
Fugitive emissions from Australian black coal mines have been estimated by the Australian Greenhouse Office to constitute 3.1 per cent of Australia's net greenhouse emissions. In order to help reduce these emissions the Australian government has established and is implementing the Australian Coal Mine Methane Reduction Programme.
This competitive grants program is designed to reduce methane emissions from Australian underground coal mines in the Kyoto target period 2008-2012. The programme is expected to reduce emissions by up to 0.9 million tonnes per year, 4.5 million tonnes over the 2008 - 2012 period.
The grant funding available under the programme is $15.9 million over five years starting from 2007-08.
Submissions closed on Monday 23 July 2007.
