Reducing the Use of Hydroflurocarbons in the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Industry
GREENHOUSE GAS ABATEMENT PROGRAM PROJECT
Project Management: Natural Refrigerants Transition Board Ltd
Project Details:
- NRTB is a 'not for profit' organisation founded in 2002 by members and suppliers of the refrigeration industry. Its aim is to educate and encourage industry about the environmental benefits of using natural refrigerants instead of greenhouse intensive synthetic refrigerants.
- The project will consist of two actions which will encourage the uptake of natural refrigerants in the commercial refrigeration and air conditioning industry:
- At least 5 different natural refrigerant concepts will be trialled in various stores throughout Australia, with the potential to roll the technologies out to 150 supermarkets. The benefits of the new technologies to industry will be evaluated through ongoing monitoring.
- Development and implementation of training programs to create the knowledge base within the industry to support these new technologies. The NRTB will work with TAFEs to incorporate courses into existing curriculums for apprentices and existing refrigeration technicians. Up to 500 technicians are expected to be trained once the project has been fully implemented.
- A structured publicity and industry awareness programme will accompany these actions.
GGAP Funding: Up to $2 million was awarded under the GGAP.
Total Project Cost: Approximately $10.9 million
Expected Greenhouse Gas Abatement: Up to 390,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent during the Kyoto period, at the time the project was approved.
Note: Carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2-e) is the basis for comparing the warming effect of a greenhouse gas as compared to carbon dioxide and is calculated by multiplying the mass of a greenhouse gas by its global warming potential.
