About the guide

The Department of the Environment and Heritage has responsibility for implementation and management of the Hazardous Waste (Regulation of Exports and Imports) Act 1989. This Act implements Australia’s obligations under the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal.

As part of this responsibility, the Department of the Environment and Heritage is committed to providing guidance and advice on the administration of the Act and the Convention. This series of information papers is intended to provide a resource to people and organisations intending to import or export hazardous waste under the Australian Act.

This information paper has been compiled by the Hazardous Waste Section of the Department of the Environment and Heritage and will be updated from time to time. While all reasonable efforts have been made to ensure the information contained in this paper is correct, the Commonwealth accepts no responsibility for the accuracy or completeness of the information contained in this paper. Any suggestions on the clarity of the paper are welcome.

This paper replaces the first edition of Information Paper No. 4, published in June 1998. It clarifies the requirements of the Hazardous Waste (Regulation of Exports and Imports) Act 1989.
