Moreland Solar City
The Moreland Solar City (formerly known as the Coburg Solar City) was announced on 10 June 2008 and work is currently underway to prepare for the launch to the community.
The Moreland Solar City project is focused on the Moreland municipality in the inner north of Melbourne.
The Moreland Solar City consortium is working with government, businesses and the local community to trial sustainable energy solutions.
What is involved?
Information about energy use and energy related community behaviour will be collected from a range of planned trials which will integrate the following components:
Zero Carbon Moreland
- A community-wide campaign to engage Moreland residents, businesses and community groups in reducing their energy use
Warm Home Cool Home
- A community enterprise which is delivering energy efficiency services to 1000 low income households. This sub-project will develop practical methods to assess and install effective energy efficiency measures
Energy Services
- focusing on bringing together international experience and recent Australian innovations to develop a strategic approach and manage corporate energy and greenhouse gas emissions, and to implement large scale, commercial energy efficiency projects
The Coburg Initiative
- looking at ways to integrate sustainable urban design, innovative technology, and distributed power generation into a large scale redevelopment of Coburg - the city centre of the Moreland municipality
Consortium leaders
The Moreland Solar City consortium is joining the Australian Government in delivering this trial. The consortium is led by the Moreland Energy Foundation Ltd in partnership with the Moreland City Council, Sustainability Victoria and the Brotherhood of St Laurence.
