Issue: Indigenous languages - State of indigenous languages
This is an issue under the Natural and cultural heritage theme of the Data Reporting System.
Why we need to know about this issue
Indigenous languages of Australia, which connect Indigenous people to country, possess a great storehouse of knowledge and tradition about the environment and ancient culture of Australia. These are an intangible part of Australia’s heritage and are often overlooked by non-Indigenous people. Many Indigenous languages are under threat and a knowledge of the status of these language is important to help preserve these unique knowledge systems and traditions.

- NCH-24 Survey of use of Indigenous languages
Surveys of the use of such languages are currently the only available indicator for this issue.
