Indicator: LD-28 Percentage and area of farms with planted trees

Data

According to the National Farm Forestry Inventory, five per cent (66,980 ha) of the total plantation resource is reported as farm forestry.

What the data mean

At this stage, farm forestry in Australia is still in its infancy. A significant increase in the area of land previously used for other agriculture and now under farm forestry over time would indicate an effective response to vegetation loss. This is especially the case where land that was originally under forest and was cleared for grazing pasture is being returned to forest for farm forestry.

Data Limitations

Data are not available on area of farms planting trees for reasons other than commercial farm forestry.

Issues for which this is an indicator and why

Land - Societal responses - Responses to vegetation loss, carbon loss, species loss and species change

Replanted trees is an important measure of efforts to redress the damage done to the land by vegetation removal and the further pressures resulting from that removal. Percentage of farms with planted trees gives some physical measure of the extent of the response.

Other indicators for this issue:

Biodiversity - Landscapes - Government action on landscape protection

Changes in number or area of farms with planted trees would be in part an indicator for government action on this issue.
