Indicator: LD-29 Area and proportion of forest under "best practice"

Data

Areas of forest, old growth forest and areas of old growth forest in reserves in CRA/RFA regions

Areas of forest, old growth forest and areas of old growth forest in reserves in CRA/RFA regions

Source: Old growth forests in Australia - conservation status and significance for timber production, Australian Government Bureau of Rural Sciences, March 2004

What the data mean

Under the Regional Forest Agreements, 3.7 million hectares of old growth forest are now in conservation reserves. This is 71 per cent of the total area (5.2 million hectares) of old growth in CRA/RFA regions.

Few data area available on area of forest protected by best practice techniques other than inclusion in a reserve system.

Data Limitations

The data shows only the area of old growth forest that is protected by virtue of being in reserves. It does not reflect on the area of unreserved old growth forests, of regrowth forests or of plantations under various types and quality of management.

Issues for which this is an indicator and why

Land - Societal responses - Responses to vegetation loss, carbon loss, species loss and species change

Deforestation since European settlement has had a massive impact on the Australian landscape and its biodiversity. Area of remaining forest under various degrees and types of management provides insight into the quality of the national response to deforestation.

Other indicators for this issue:

Biodiversity - Landscapes - Government action on landscape protection

Changes in area of forest under best practice would be in part an indicator for government action on this issue.
