What the data mean

Due to the inadequacy of the data available, it is not possible to draw any specific conclusions on volunteer numbers in the historic, Indigenous and natural heritage sectors.

Between June 2000 and June 2004, there has been a decrease (30%) in the number of persons serving as volunteers in museums in all States/Territories, except in Tasmania.

Data Limitations

Data available on the number of volunteers trained by heritage organizations is not comprehensive and is therefore inadequate. Data presented on the number of volunteers in museums is limited to one month in the survey year.

The data available does not indicate the level of training attained by the volunteers. A proportion of these volunteers would have received no formal or professional training.

Issues for which this is an indicator and why

Natural and Cultural Heritage — Expertise and skills for managing heritage - Training and participation in the heritage industries
