A   Current Indigenous staff working in the NSW Heritage Office.  In period 2001-2003 the number was 1.
B    Staff in Aboriginal Areas Protection Agency
C    Queensland heritage agency has appointed four Aboriginal Coordinators under new Indigenous heritage legislation (Brisbane, Toowoomba, Rockhampton and Cloncurry)
D    This includes the Indigenous Heritage Office and Parks and Wildlife Service, further Indigenous staff work in the Tasmanian Heritage Office but have not been separately identified.
E    Approximately 12 Indigenous people have worked in the Heritage Services Branch at AAV since 2001(including full‑time and casual staff).
F    There has been a total of 21 Indigenous people working in H&C branch between 01/01/2001 and 17/01/2005. This figure includes part-time, contract and permanent staff. These are different persons. These persons have worked within the H&C branch on an intermittent basis during that time. The current number of Indigenous staff is 5. In 2001 the number was 1. The range of Indigenous staff numbers is between 4 and 8. The total number of staff in the H&C branch is currently 22. The total number of staff in 2001 was 9. The reason for the major change is numbers is that the staff associated with the running of the Register moved from one branch into a re-structured H&C branch.

It is not possible from the limited data available to draw any conclusions about trends in Indigenous employment in Government heritage agencies.

Data Limitations

No data are available on the number of people working in Indigenous organisations, and the number of Indigenous enrolments in university heritage courses. The data available on the number of Indigenous persons working in state and territory agencies is not comprehensive.

Natural and Cultural Heritage — Expertise and skills for managing heritage - Training and participation in the heritage industries 

The expertise and skills are essential for the adequate management of heritage places and items. The number of Indigenous people involved in heritage activities and institutions are indicators of the Indigenous expertise and skills that are available to heritage managers.
