What the data mean
The electricity generation sector consumed the largest share (31%) of energy fuels in 2001-02 with 1552.6 PJ followed by the transport sector with 25% and the manufacturing sector (23%). The residential sector consumed only 8% of the total.
The electricity generation sector is the largest energy consuming sector in the Australian economy, currently accounting for almost 46 per cent of all primary energy use. The transport sector is the second largest energy consuming sector (24% of total primary energy consumption), followed by the manufacturing and construction sector.
Energy consumption in all sectors have increased by 60% steadily since 1980-81. The largest percentage increase (>250%) was in the mining sector followed by the electricity generation sector (100%). Consumption in both the transport and residential sectors increased consumption by 50%.
Road transport is the single biggest end user of energy, consuming almost 40 per cent of the energy used in Australia.
Issues for which this is an indicator and why
Human Settlements — Pressures created by human settlements on the environment - Energy use
The amount of energy consumed by different sectors within human settlements varies. The tracking of trends in energy consumption within different sectors will assist in implementing energy efficiencies.
Other indicators for this issue:
- HS-31 National energy use
- HS-34 Energy use in transport
- HS-36 Percent of energy derived from renewable sources
- HS-37 Energy use per capita and per unit of GDP
- LD-11 Total energy value of land-based energy fuels from non-living sources produced in Australia
- CO-10 Total energy production from the Australian marine environment
