What the data mean
The amount of energy consumed by the transport sector has continued to increase from 1990/91 to 2001/02. The largest amount (nearly 80%) of energy consumed in 2001/02 within the transport sector was used for road transport. This was followed by consumption in the air (14%) water (3%) and rail (2%) transport sub-sectors.
Within the road transport sub-sector, passenger vehicles consumed nearly two-thirds of the total amount of fuel.
Total passenger travel in the urban areas has grown almost nine-fold over the past 50 years, to nearly 180 billion passenger km in 2000. Almost all that growth came from cars and 'other' road vehicles (mostly light commercial vehicles used for private travel, and motorcycles).
Domestic freight task is a surrogate for the energy used in transporting freight. The modal share of road freight task almost doubled (from19% to 36%) between 1971 and 2000. Freight transport by rail increased from 28% to 34% in the same period while sea freight decreased from 52% to 30%.
The road freight task relating to urban areas increased more than 3 fold between 1971 and 2000 while the non-urban task increased more than 4 fold. There was little change in the share of urban versus non-urban freight tasks.
Nearly three-fourths of the domestic freight task is carried out within the State/Territory and about 28% of this is within the capital cities.
Issues for which this is an indicator and why
Human Settlements — Pressures created by human settlements on the environment - Energy use
The transport sector is the second largest sector in terms of energy consumption in Australia. This indicator tracks changes in energy use by this sector.
Other indicators for this issue:
- HS-31 National energy use
- HS-33 Energy use by sector
- HS-36 Percent of energy derived from renewable sources
- HS-37 Energy use per capita and per unit of GDP
- LD-11 Total energy value of land-based energy fuels from non-living sources produced in Australia
- CO-10 Total energy production from the Australian marine environment
