Indicator: AATH-01 Macquarie and Heard Islands - survey of the condition of shipwrecks on or around and sites associated with the sealing industry
Data
For details of the survey refer to:
What the data mean
The main sealing activities were carried out on Heard Island between 1855 and 1877. On Macquarie Island, sealing activities were carried out from 1810 and some penguins were also exploited for oil from 1870.
There is archaeological evidence of sealing activities and shipwrecks on Heard and Macquarie Islands. Most of the huts and structures (mostly wooden) are in a poor condition as a result of weathering and exposure. Some structures and artefacts are identifiable including metal cauldrons (trypots), stone platforms, tools, stone footings for buildings, barrels.
Data Limitations
More heritage/archaeological surveys are required for a more complete understanding.
