What the data mean

Listing on heritage lists or as a World Heritage Area affords protection for heritage sites and places certain management obligations for the conservation of heritage sites.

The data shows that several sites have been listed on the National and Commonwealth Heritage lists and as such are viewed as being culturally significant. Macquarie Island and the Territory of Heard and the McDonald Islands are also prescribed as World Heritage Areas; the former for its geological and natural attributes and the latter for its natural values.

No data is available that would allow an assessment of the success of listing as a protection measure.
