Issue: Contributions and pressures between the land and the ocean - Pressures of ocean change on the land
This is an issue under the Land theme of the Data Reporting System.
Why we need to know about this issue
The ocean contributes inputs from marine species and climate moderation to the land. Changes in conditions, including water quality, water temperature, water salinity and species present (or absent), in marine waters systems, can place pressure on land species via species living at the land-ocean interface (eg beaches, reefs, headlands). It can also place pressure on the land during sea surge events, or in the event of rising sea levels or changing currents.
Indicators
- CO-01 Trends in selected groups of coastal and marine species and habitats
Changes in the condition of species and habitats that live at the land- ocean interface (seabird and shorebird populations, mangrove and saltmarsh) may be indicative of changes in the pressures and contributions between the land and the sea. - CO-03 Sea level
Sea level change has the potential to place pressure on the land as coastal terrestrial ecosystems become drowned or saline. - CO-68 Examples of sea surge and seawater intrusion events
Sea water influx has the potential to place pressure on the land as coastal terrestrial ecosystems become drowned or saline.
