Issue: Societal responses - Protected terrestrial areas
This is an issue under the Land theme of the Data Reporting System.
Why we need to know about this issue
Societal responses to environmental issues often attempt to address a mix of pressures and conditions, rather than being developed on a one-to-one basis against each pressure or each aspect of condition. ‘Protected’ status prevents a wide range of pressures impacting on other land, or reduces their impact, thus protecting a range of aspects of condition. Protected areas preserve species and ecosystems that might otherwise disappear from the land and also provide ‘nurseries’ from which outside land can be re-seeded, should it ever become available for the re-establishment of native species.
Indicators
- BD-19 Extent and comprehensiveness of terrestrial protected areas
Mechanisms for protection are legislation in the case of public land or by a covenant or conservation agreement for privately owned or indigenous land.
Extent provides a direct measure of the area under protection and comprehensiveness gives some idea of the range of species protected within these areas.
