Issue: Services provided by the environment to human settlements - Recreation from the environment
This is an issue under the Human settlements theme of the Data Reporting System.
Why we need to know about this issue
Human settlements are sustained through a number of services that are received from the environment. These services provide the resource inputs to human settlements and may be degraded on by wastes and emissions generated by them.
These services include environment based recreation such as going to the beach or the countryside.
Indicators
- CO-12 Value of and numbers participating in coastal and marine-based tourism and recreation
The number of people paying for activities which allow them to enjoy the natural coastal and marine environment, and the amount they are willing to pay to do so, is a partial indicator of the value of the non material contribution of the land to human settlements. - LD-13 Value of and numbers participating in landscape-based tourism and recreation
Both the terrestrial and marine environment provide non-material benefits to human settlements in the form of recreation and other enjoyment. The number of people paying for activities which allow them to enjoy the natural land environment, and the amount they are willing to pay to do so, is a partial indicator of the value of the non material contribution of the land to human settlements. - BD-25 Tourism activities based in areas of high biodiversity significance
Australia's natural features attract millions of visitors (domestic and international) each year and generate significant economic benefits for regions. Many people are embracing ‘ecotourism’. Ideally, to show contribution of biodiversity tourism to human recreation, the indicator would show tourist days and tourist dollars, broken down by areas of high, medium and low biodiversity value and/or vulnerability.
