Issue: General responses provided to improve the environment - Environmental management systems

Why we need to know about this issue
The willingness and ability to rise to the challenges posed by natural resource management will be influenced by the participation of industry, government and the public. Engagement of organisations in measuring their own environmental and sustainability performance are indicators of the seriousness with which they are approaching their response to environmental issues.
Indicators
- HS-59 Number of ISO 14 000 certified organisations
The ISO 14000 certification of an internationally acknowledged standard that is primarily concerned with "environmental management systems", which assist organisations to:
- minimize harmful effects on the environment caused by their activities, and
- achieve continual improvement of their environmental performance.
This indicator shows the number of Australian organisations that have received ISO 140000 accreditation. - HS-60 Number of companies that publish sustainability reports
Industry and business sectors, as major players in resource use and waste generation, cause significant negative impacts on the environment. In recent years there has been increasing environmental awareness within these sectors; more and more companies have been putting in place environmental management systems to help mitigate these negative impacts on the environment. This indicator measures the extent to which public reporting of environmental management plans and sustainability strategies have been taken up by companies in these sectors.
