The Alligator Rivers Region Advisory Committee

The Alligator Rivers Region Advisory Committee (ARRAC) is established under the Environment Protection (Alligator Rivers Regions) Act 1978 to facilitate communication between community, government and industry stakeholders. ARRAC is a forum for information exchange and policy consultation on the effects of uranium mining on the Alligator Rivers Region environment.

An important function of ARRAC is to reassure members, their constituents and the wider Australian public that the environment in this region is receiving the highest possible level of protection. ARRAC provides stakeholders with the opportunity to exchange relevant information and to consult on significant policy issues relating to protection and restoration of the environment from the effects of uranium mining operations.

Government reports provided to ARRAC become public information. Disclosure of environmental performance information is a way of building trust amongst stakeholders, by reducing the potential for misinterpretation of information.

Documents tabled at ARRAC meetings include:

The committee consists of representatives from a broad range of stakeholders under the guidance of an independent Chairperson. Stakeholders include mining companies, the Government regulator, Australian ,Territory and Local Government Departments ,non- Government environmental organisations and local aboriginal associations. The committee meets twice a year,. These meetings facilitate timely and accurate discussion of performance issues, and an opportunity to address the impacts of the marked wet and dry tropical seasons on the effectiveness of environmental protection.
